Extracts for colds, painful joints and erectile dysfunction

With its Finzelberg business unit, the Martin Bauer Group will be presenting three innovations at the CPhI Worldwide (Convention on Pharmaceutical Ingredients) in Paris: nutrifin® immune, nutrifin® motion plus and plantagra®. Trade visitors to the company’s stand (stand no: 6G84) will be able to learn about how the extracts and concepts work and the many different ways in which they can be used.

Extracts from the pink rock rose for common colds, a concept from rose hip peel extract and collagen hydrolysate for joint complaints, as well as a leaf extract of the Damiana for use as an aphrodisiac – from 5 to 7 October the Finzelberg business unit of the Martin Bauer Group will be presenting three new highlights from their portfolio all at the same time. “The extracts and concepts taking centre stage in our fair presentation show yet again the remarkable variety of ways in which the power of nature can be used”, says Dr. Björn Feistel, head of Finzelberg’s product development department. “The effect of the products has been proven and it offers manufacturers of medicines and nutritional supplements new opportunities to react to the needs and requirements consumers have today.”

nutrifin® immune: preventing and relieving colds
One of the concepts being presented at the CPhI is nutrifin® immune. Its secret is to be found in a choice extract of the pink rock rose, which was used as a medicinal plant to fight colds as early as the fourth century before Christ, and is already valued as a tea today because of its high levels of polyphenols (approx. 10 per cent). Finzelberg has selected from various varieties of pink rock rose one with a particularly high polyphenol concentration and has developed extracts from it whose polyphenol content is at least 20 per cent but can be as high as 60 per cent, if desired. Studies have shown that this produces, among other things, a marked antioxidant, antiviral and anti-inflammatory effect which can be used not only prophylactically but which also provides relief for acute coughs, flu and colds. There are a host of different ways in which pink rock rose extract can be used – going from tablets and capsules, to lozenges, instant powders, juices and creams, and even throat and nasal sprays. And thanks to the samples being offered at the fair stand, visitors will be able to find out for themselves what nutrifin® immune tastes like as a hot drink, for example.

nutrifin® motion plus: helping to keep joints healthy
Likewise coming under nutritional supplements is nutrifin® motion plus, a new concept developed by Finzelberg which is suitable for preventing and treating joint complaints. nutrifin® motion plus is Finzelberg´s patented combination of rose hip peel extract and hydrolyzed collagen . One of the features of the extract of rose hip peel is its noticeable anti-inflammatory effect on cytokines (IL1ß, IL6, TNFalpha, PGE2) and thus its pain-relieving properties. The hydrolyzed collagen improves the structure of the cartilage tissue and promotes the regeneration of the cartilage. “Tests show that the regenerative effect produced by combining the extract and hydrolyzed collagen is increased by 40 per cent”, explains Dr. Björn Feistel. “That makes nutrifin® motion plus the obvious choice when we’re concerned with the health of joints.” nutrifin® motion plus comes as an instant powder.

plantagra®: modern aphrodisiac
A new development in the field of pharmaceuticals is plantagra®. The patented extract from Damiana leaves is an aphrodisiac and is used in the treatment of erectile dysfunction – a problem increasingly on the rise in the industrialised countries due to stress and lifestyles. The Damiana leaves were actually used by the Mayas as an aphrodisiac and stimulant. Working together with the Vitaplant® laboratory, Finzelberg was able to identify a hitherto unknown attribute of Damiana – the inhibition of the enzyme PDE-5. Just like the Viagra® active ingredient sildenafil citrate, the 100% plant-based Damiana extract inhibits the enzyme PDE-5. This newly discovered active principle accounts for Damiana’s traditional use advancing to a modern aphrodisiac. Moreover, the safety and efficacy of plantagra® has already been demonstrated in a clinical study: after an eight-week course of treatment with plantagra® there was an appreciable increase in the erectile function of the test persons and how they rated their own sexual behaviour – and all with no side effects whatsoever.
