What’s trending in RTD tea

Iced tea is still one of the most consumed beverages worldwide according to the Tea Association of the USA. Therefore, one can assume that the global RTD tea market will further grow in the next few years. However, there is still work to be done on improving the unhealthy image of classic products.

Consumers are taking a closer look at ingredient lists more than ever before, seeking botanicals, premium quality and reduced sugar content. Enjoying RTD tea ideally not only quenches thirst, but also has a positive impact on health and wellness. With the market’s current product offerings, it is not set-up to meet this demand long-term.

Today’s strong preference for botanical ingredients allows innovative and authentic new taste creations which have been instrumental on RTD tea growth. According to Mintel, botanicals are indeed growing fast, with flowers and spices in particular gaining traction. Ginger and hibiscus for instance have recently emerged as preferred botanical ingredients within RTD tea. Meanwhile, trending ingredients, such as turmeric, offer a high potential for new exciting developments in this segment.

Thinking premium is another positive development as consumers increasingly value high quality products. Premium drinks in the RTD tea segment stand for their naturalness, freshness as well as their authentic taste that clearly differentiates them from their traditional counterparts in the market.

As consumption and sales of sugary options are noticeably declining, it is not surprising that one of the key focus areas in RTD tea innovation is sugar reduction. Indeed the average sugar content in global RTD tea launches has seen a steady decline over the past few years. According to Mintel average sugar content has fallen by 20% in Asia Pacific, 13% in North America and 9% in Europe. Unsweetened varieties with no added sugar or sweeteners gained traction accounting for 5% of global RTD tea launches in the past year. This allows more creativity in your beverage applications – the main thing is an exceptional and natural taste without or with a reduced level of sugar.

Dive in with us and see the countless possibilities for RTD tea that nature has to offer. Whether its trending botanicals, premium options or 100% natural botanical sweetness.
