Botanical sweetness!

Today’s consumers are looking for natural, healthy and clean-label products. Whilst shifting away from sugar is one key concern, it is not surprising that “Naturally sweetened” is the most appealing claim in food and drink worldwide, according to Global Data.

As consumers increasingly opt for RTD beverages with reduced or no sugar, the industry is facing serious challenges. The average sugar content in global RTD tea launches has seen a steady decline over the past few years. Indeed the percentage of global drink launches that contained sugar/carbohydrate sweeteners decreased to 46% in the 12 months ending October 2019, Mintel analyzed. While there is an increasing demand for reduced sugar content, the exceptional taste experience remains one of the top considerations for consumers. The reformulation and development of new beverages without compromising on taste is thereby a key challenge for most companies. However, it does not mean that removing or replacing sugar must be complicated.
